How to Care for your Cut Evergreens

'Tis the season for Winter Greens!
During the holiday season, evergreens make their way into nearly every arrangement. Cedar. Spruce. Noble Fir. Pine. Sometimes keeping these lush, aromatic greens just as beautiful as the day they arrive can be challenging.

Here are some tips and tricks to keep your fresh cut evergreens healthy through the New Year.

WINTER Evergreens Want to be Kept Cool

Ideally, your evergreens would like to be in below 40F temperatures.

Keep them Hydrated

Just like your Christmas tree, the fresh cut evergreens need to drink plenty of water to keep their leaves or needles from dropping too much.

Mist When Possible

Evergreen designs that have limited or no access to water (Wreaths, Garlands, Swags, etc.) will benefit greatly from being misted regularly. If your arrangement also includes fresh cut flowers, try to only spray the greens as the added moisture could speed up the life cycle of the flowers.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures

All evergreen designs would like to avoid extreme temperatures (both hot and cold). Drafts can also pose a danger, if continuous. Keeping the temperature relatively stable will help the greens not have to work so hard to keep healthy and hydrated.

Natural is Best

In general, Winter Evergreens that are displayed outdoors will last the longest. They still would like to be kept out of direct sunlight.

No Fruit!

You should not keep your evergreens (or any other fresh cut arrangement) near ripening produce or anything that creates ethylene. Ethylene will speed up the life cycle of your fresh cut greenery and florals.
Now that you have these helpful tips and tricks, you are ready to deck your halls with evergreens!
