Easter Flowers

     This year Easter Sunday falls on April 17th. Two years since the pandemic began and still, many families won’t be able to celebrate together in person as they usually would. For all of those families, a great way to say “I wish I could be there!” would be a beautiful Easter arrangement.

      There are many flowers that come to mind when you hear the word spring: daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, lilies, and iris for a few examples.

     Daffodils are probably the best representation of coming spring. They start blooming right as winter is ending - take a look at many sidewalk gardens throughout Chestertown to see them sprouting. Commonly known for its vibrant yellow color, daffodils do come in white (possibly for a soft pastel Easter arrangement?).

     Tulips are arguably one of the most popular flowers in the world. In the spring, even more so! Each tulip color has its own meaning, which you can read more about here. They are a staple and many people cannot imagine their home or garden without a tulip this time of year. Luckily, we sell both the fresh-cut and bulb plant versions!

     Lilies are beautiful and come in many varieties (over 90). Calla Lily, Peace Lily, Easter Lily, Day Lily, Stargazer, Tiger Lily are just a few examples. They represent new life and are a great gift for Easter celebrations or to welcome a new baby. Easter Lily Plants are actually forced to bloom at Easter because of their popularity. If left to grow naturally, they would bloom in the summertime (late June through August).

     Daisies are the official birth month flower of April. If you are looking for a seasonal floral gift to send for your loved one’s birthday, these are the answer.      Hydrangeas tend to be a popular option for Mother’s Day, but as a spring flower, they are still a perfect gift for Easter. We won’t have the plants available this year until after Easter, but the cut flowers are always in our cooler. We love hydrangeas! They are so full and one of the few flowers that come in blue. When to Order

      Early is always best. Especially if you have a specific flower or arrangement in mind. We can special order many things for next-day or two-day shipping into the store, like tropicals or other novelties that are not in our cooler daily. ​

Floral Customs

     The Easter corsage is an old tradition, but a very important one for the people who still honor it. Typically given as a gift for wife or mother by her husband or children. It is a sign of love and gratitude.

      The Easter Lily is a symbol of purity and goodness. It can be gifted as a plant or cut lilies in an arrangement.

     Passion Flowers personify the Holy Trinity by their signature three stamens. The circle of petals represents the crown of thorns worn by Christ and the pointed leaves, the spear that went into Christ’s side while he was on the cross. Unfortunately, we do not carry passion flowers, but the importance is of the flower is not lost on us.

      Flower Festivals are held in churches all across the world, displaying some beautiful spring flowers in the celebration of the renewal of life that is brought by the spring.
